Cosmetic dentistry & orthodontics can help your smile

When you think about cosmetic dentistry, most people think of getting their teeth straightened.  Actually, it comprises of a series of procedures including teeth whitening, porcelain and composite veneers, implants, bridges, bonding, reshaping, dentures, crowns and more including orthodontics.  Dental implants are growing in popularity and consist of fixtures of titanium which are surgically screwed into the jaw bone.  The implant acts as an anchor so that a naturally looking false tooth or teeth can be secured.  The best place to have dental implants is in the front of the lower jaw if there is enough bone for the implants to be attached to.  Cosmetic dentistry involving implants is starting to overtake certain bridges and removable dentures because of their success.

Another cosmetic dentistry procedure that is starting to take off is dental reshaping and contouring.  This procedure is best used to help correct crooked, chipped, cracked and overlapping teeth.  Often, significant improvements can be achieved in just one session as compared to orthodontics which can last for months or even years.  Reshaping and contouring of the teeth is used mainly to change the shape, position or length of the tooth or teeth.  After your dentist has evaluated your x-rays to determine there is enough bone between your teeth, the sculpting process will begin.  Using a sanding drill or laser, your dentist will remove small amounts of surface enamel.  They will then use abrasive strips to reshape the sides of your teeth or tooth.  The teeth are then polished to create a smooth surface. This may all be done in one session but sometimes multiple sessions may be required.

For major changes to your teeth, your dentist may suggest porcelain veneers, crowns or braces.  Accelerated orthodontics is really getting popular, especially for older patients.  Traditional braces are required to be worn from one to three years.  Accelerated braces can straighten your teeth in only three to eight months.  Because of this quick improvement to your smile, this form of cosmetic dentistry is really gaining momentum. Improvement to procedures is happening constantly so your best bet is to discuss your dental requirements with a qualified surgeon who can assist you properly.
